Question : 12 of 13

Marks: +1, -0
A concave mirror forms a real image of an object kept at a distance 9cm from it. If the object is taken away from the mirror by 6cm, the image size reduces to 14 th of its previous size. Find the focal length of the mirror.
Solution:
For the 1st position :
Object distance =u1=−9cm
Image size =h1′
Object size =h1
Using mirror formula
1u+1v=1f
Or, −19+1v1=1f .........(i)
Magnification =h1′h1=v1u1
For the 2nd position :
Object distance =u2=−15cm
Image size =h2′=14h1′
Object size =h1
Using mirror formula
1u+1v=1f
Or, −115+1v2=1f ........(ii)
Magnification =h2′h1=14h1′h1=v2u2
Or, 14v1u1=v2u2
Or, v2=512v1
Comparing equations (i) and (ii),
−19+1v1=−115+1v2
Or, 115−19=1v2−1v1
Or, −245=125v1−1v1
Or, −245=75v1
∴v1=−632cm
Putting in eqn (i),
−19−263=1f
Or, −17=1f
∴f= focal length =−7cm
