Question : 34 of 37

Marks: +1, -0
Two objects P and Q when placed at different positions in front of a concave mirror of focal length 20cm, form real images of equal size. Size of object P is three times the size of object Q. If the distance of P is 50cm from the mirror, find the distance of Q from the mirror.
Solution:
Mirror formula : 1v+1u=1f
Magnification =m=h′h=vu
For object P :
up=−50cm
f=−20cm
1vp+1up=1f
Or, 1vp+1−50=1−20
∴vP=−1003cm
mP=hP′hP=vPuP=−1003−50=23
For object Q :
mQ=hQ′hQ=vQuQ
Or, hp′13hP=vQuQ
∴vQ=uQ
1vQ+1uQ=1f
12uQ+1uQ=1−20
∴ uQ=−30cm
So, the distance of Q from mirror is 30cm .
