Question : 7 of 9

Marks: +1, -0
A convex lens of focal length 20cm is placed coaxially with a convex mirror of radius of curvature 20cm. The two are kept at 15cm from each other. A point object placed 40cm in front of the convex lens. Find the position of the image formed by this combination. Draw a ray diagram to show the formation.
Solution:
Given, A=−40cm and, f=20cm
From the lens formula, we have:
1v−1u=1f
⇒1v=1f+1u
⇒1v=120+1(−40)
⇒1v=2−140=140
v=40cm
The positive sign describes that the image is formed to the right of the lens.

The image I1 is formed behind the mirror and thus acts as a virtual source for the mirror. The convex mirror forms the image I2, whose distance from the mirror is given by:
1v+1v=1f
Here: u=25cm
f=R2=10cm
1v+1v=1f
⇒1v=1f−1u
⇒1v=110−125
⇒1v=5−250=350
⇒v=+16.67cm
Hence, the final image is formed at a distance of 16.67cm behind the convex mirror.
