Question : 11 of 29

Marks: +1, -0
(i) Is the binary operation *, defined on set N, given by a * b = a+b2 for all a , b ∊ N, commutative?
(ii) Is the above binary operation * associative?
Solution:
(i) For all a , b ∊ N , a * b = a+b2
Now , b * a = b+a2 = a+b2 = a * b
Thus, the binary operation * is commutative.
(ii) Let a , b , c ∊ N
a * b * c = a * (b+c2) = a+b+c22 = 2a+b+c4
a * b * c = (a+b2) * c = a+b2+c2 = a+b+2c4
∴ a * b * c ≠ a * b * c
Thus, the binary operation * is not associative.
