The decomposition of NH3 on platinum surface is zero order reaction. If rate constant k is 4×10−3Ms− 1, how long will it take to reduce the initial concentration of NH3 from 0.1M to 0.064M.
Solution:
The equation for the zero order reaction is:
[A]=[A0]−kt
Given:
[A0]=0.1M
[A]=0.064
k=4×10−3M∕ s
Putting the values in the equation, and solving the equation for t, we get:
0.064=0.1−(4×10−3×t)
0.064−0.1=−(4×10−3×t)
−0.036=−(4×10−3×t)
t=−0.036−4×10−3=9 s
