At anode:

{\Zn}( {\Hg})+2 {\OH}^{-} → {\ZnO}( {\ s})+ {\H}_2 {\O}+2 {\e}^{-}

At cathode:

{\HgO}( {\ s})+ {\H}_2 {\O}+2 {\e}^{-} → {\Hg}( {\l})+2 {\OH}^{-}

Overall reaction:

{\Zn}( {\Hg})+ {\HgO}( {\ s}) → {\ZnO}( {\ s})+ {\Hg}( {\l})
