Study the diagram given below and identify the gas formed in the reaction.
Solution:
When dilute sulphuric acid is poured on zinc granules, zinc being more reactive than hydrogen displaces it from the acid and forms zinc sulphate and hydrogen gas. Hydrogen is a combustible gas and burns with a popping sound. This can be observed when a burnt match stick is bought near to the beaker. Thus, the gas formed is H2 gas and reaction can be represented as follows:
Zn( s)Zinc+H2SO4(aq)Sulphuric acid→ZnSO4(aq)Zinc sulphate+H2(g)↑Hydrogen
